Central Truth
As believers and followers of Christ we are to be examples of the life He lived while on this earth. God sent Jesus into the world to show us the way to heaven. In the same way we are to show unbelievers the way to God and eternal life.
Reflections
I grew up a preacher's kid. I still remember feeling different than everyone else because I knew I had to be an example. This became very evident to me one day while I was playing a prank with several neighborhood children. We ran to a neighbor's door, rang the doorbell, and then ran away to hide. When the neighbor answered she shouted, "You kids ought to be ashamed, especially you Gwen, a minister's daughter". I was fearful all night that she would call my father and tell of my mischief. She never called but I still remember the lesson I learned on that day over 40 years ago. Much is expected of God's children. We are held to a higher standard. The world is watching and expects us to be an example.
In Matthew 5, Jesus delivers the Sermon on the Mount. He describes to the people gathered the attributes that God rewards. Jesus made it clear in His sermon on the mount that God values those who act in a way that pleases Him. He wants us to be dependent on Him and to acknowledge our need for him. In our world, dependence is viewed as weakness so we seek independence. Society values people who are exceptional in their physical appearance and abilities but God blesses the humble. He also loves peace, justice and purity while our world is full of violence, war and vulgarity.
Sometimes I feel confused about how I should respond to different situations as a Christian. This chapter clarifies what God desires from us. If we as Christians sometimes feel confused imagine how someone with the world's perspective feels. The world is lost in the darkness and cannot find its way to God. We are God's light to show the way to Him by living as examples just as Jesus did for us.
God knew it would be difficult for His children to live in this world so He has promised us a reward for our faithfulness by saying, "blessed are those who are persecuted for doing right for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."

3. How can you improve your example? Are there things you need to change?
