READ THE CHAPTER
Central Truth
We must have faith that God is at work even when we can’t see his hand. Trust and obey.
Reflections
There have been times when I did not know or understand how God was working in my life—when life didn’t make sense to me—until some time had passed. There have also been events in my life that I still do not understand. Sometimes I have asked, “Why?"
When Jesus’ mother informs Him “They have no more wine,” His reply to her suggests that He is unconcerned about the matter. And when He commands the servants “Fill the jars with water,” the request appears unrelated to the problem. Jesus’ next command, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies,” seems strange. “Do you really want me to give the master of ceremonies a drink from water jars used for ceremonial washing?” I could see myself asking that question. Although Jesus is at work in a way that doesn’t make “sense” at the moment, the servants obey Him even though they do not know what will happen next. As a result, Jesus allows the “ordinary” servants (who because of their unquestioning obedience are truly remarkable) to play a part in a miracle where He takes the ordinary and transforms it into something extraordinary.
Just like the servants who did not know what was going to happen next, we too must be willing to trust and obey. He saves the best for last. But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth He has promised; a world filled with God’s righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13)
