WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET WELL?

Key Verse

Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?” “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” instantly, the man was healed! (John 5:6-9, NLT)

Central Truth

Jesus knows us and He has the power and desire to make us get well from all kinds of sickness.

Reflections

I was driving from work while I was listening to John 5 over and over again and the verses that caught my attention in such a way that I had to repeat them lots of times: verse 6, “Would you like to get well?” asked the Lord. “I can’t sir.” Imagine the Creator of the whole universe; He established the earth in its place, and the stars. He created the plants and the animals, and the oceans and the sky and you and me.  Imagine, this man probably heard about some of the miracles that Jesus had done. I imagined the Lord asking me, “Would you like to get well?”  I can’t sir, I can’t do it, I can’t get well. Nobody pays attention to me. Nobody helps me in this church. I can’t, for I am not part of the choir. I can’t, for I am not best friends with the pastor or the elders. I can’t get well; my brothers in Christ do not help me get well. I can’t get well, I am not saintly enough. I can’t get well; I have not read the whole Bible or attended that special seminar or conference. I am trying to get well. It is just that I have nobody to help me. This is the conversation I was having in my mind when trying to put myself in that situation. Pay closer attention to the question again! Would you like to get well? He is not asking what you have done or what people have done to make you get well. Would you like to get well?

"Yes, yes, yes;" that should be the answer to a simple question. "Yes" should be the response to this question. "I would like to get well. Yes Lord, I would like to get well!"

Discussion Questions

1. If you hear Jesus’ voice today asking you, if you would like to get well, what would be your answer?

2. What would be the conversation in your mind? Are you like the sick man, trying to explain why you can’t get well?

3. What are you waiting to happen in order to say, "Yes, yes, I would like to get well"?

EXCELLENT POINT!!!! This message was straight forward, and so easy to read that a child could understand that GOD is waiting for us............not we waiting for God. Thank you, Thank you for that word today.

Leo is blazing a powerful trail with his message today...It's not about your relationship with others - it's about your relationship with God. I am so impressed with all the authors of the devotionals. Each day has shown me another way of looking at Bible verses.

    1. My answer would be “Yes”. I want to be whole and relating to the Lord in a healed way so that I do not get sidetracked with emotional and health issues that side track my understanding of His Word. 2. Yes, because I have asked before and the Lord has not answered my prayer yet on some parts of my request for healing, but He has answered my requests on other healing issues.. If I stay in fellowship with the Lord then, His mercy can begin to reveal to me where, how, when, He is bringing the rest of the healing. I just have to stay in the praying/ expecting good from our Good God mode. 3. Courage and boldness to accept the responsibility. Thanks Leo, for sharing your journey with me today! Dorothy Beebe
