Central Truth
Distinguishing God's voice from Satan's voice is a key aspect of Christian living.
Reflections
Years ago the comedian Flip Wilson delivered a line that would explain his behavior. It was, “The Devil made me do it!” Although it was said in jest, it did in a humorous way acknowledge that demonic or satanic forces could have influence over people's lives. So how does a believer know whether it is the voice of God speaking or the voice of evil forces? Years ago I read an article that provided a concise and well-worded explanation. The article was in The Evidence magazine titled, “Ten sure ways you can tell the difference between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemnation of the Devil.” I can only summarize a few statements here, but you can read the article by going to http://www.terryewell.com/JTJ/JTJ_Extra.html.
Tone of voice. The Holy Spirit is gentle and imploring. In contrast Satan is accusatory and belittling.
Specific vs. vague. The Holy Spirit points to specific actions you should take to correct your relationship with God and others. Satan on the other hand tells you everything is wrong and there is really nothing you can do to fix it.
Encouragement vs. discouragement. God's message encourages to rely on His power not ours. Satan attacks people, discouraging them.
Forget the past vs. remember the past. God forgives our sins. Satan loves to replay “videos” of our past wrong doings.
Attraction to God vs. rejection. The Holy Spirit pulls us toward God. Satan convinces people that they are unworthy and rejected by God.
Rightly brings the Scriptures vs. distorts the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit is given to help us understand the Bible. Satan, however, wants to twist the words and their meanings.
Draws you into fellowship vs. isolates. God wants a family. Satan wants loners.
Facts of the Word vs. feelings. The Holy Spirit brings forth the facts. Satan wants our feelings to override the truth.
Discipline vs. destruction. The Holy Spirit disciplines us and this makes us stronger. Satan seeks to tear us down.
Reassures vs. accuses. These two words perhaps best describe the differences.
Discussion Questions
1. Can you recount times when you heard God's voice or felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit? Does the information above confirm that it was His work in your life?2. Why do you think satanic forces want to undermine people's lives?
3. How can you become more sensitive to God's voice?
