THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US

Key Verse

He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him. But you know Him, because He lives with you now and later will be in you. (John 14:17, NLT)

Central Truth

When we ask, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us forever, empowers us, fills us, and guides us.

Reflections

Oh, the marvelous gift of the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell in us when we are born of the Spirit (John 3:7). Even though the Spirit is always with us, it is up to us to be filled and utilize Him.

Although I was a believer, there was a period in my life when I went my own way and did not allow the Spirit to lead me. But when I repented of my sin, He was right there to forgive me. I was baptized with His Spirit and received the gift of tongues (1 Cor 12:1-13). Now I cannot imagine my life without Him. Living in the flesh without the Spirit brought me heartache and emotional pain, so I choose daily to be filled by the Spirit (Eph 5:18) and led by the Spirit (Gal 5:18) which enables me to live in peace. The more difficult my circumstances, the more I seek God and He gives me peace (John 17:33). My devotional times with the Lord are precious, especially when I feel the presence of the Spirit who enables me to understand God’s Word (Eph 1:17-18), speaks to me through the Word, and helps me to pray more effectively (Rom 8:26).

When the flesh wants to take hold and steer me in the wrong direction, I am grateful that the Holy Spirit convicts me, leads me away from sin (2 Thes 2:7) (Rom 8:26), and strengthens me so I can make the right choice. Always a work in progress, I allow the Spirit to transform me by changing my thought life, my self worth, my selfishness (and much more), and to develop the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23). Gal 5:25-26 tells us to keep in step with the Spirit and Gal 5:18 says to be led by the Spirit. I allow the Spirit to lead me through each day (Rom 8:14) to accomplish His will. Whether it is making a phone call, leading a CR group, praying for someone, or just allowing His light to shine through my life, I want to be His vessel, His servant.
