DIRECTIONS A GPS CANNOT GIVE

Key Verse

When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 'Get up!' the angel said. 'Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.' So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. (Matthew 2:19-21, NLT)

Central Truth

There are some periods in our lives when we are lost and looking for the right direction. Too often we rely on our own ability and understanding instead of looking to God for guidance.

Reflections

It was the perfect winter day; there was a foot of snow, no school, and I was going sledding with my friend. On my last downhill ride of the day something went very wrong. I started to fall, so I tried to brace myself. That is when my wrist made a funny popping noise; I thought that this would be a perfect time to stop for the day.

My friend and I walked back to his house and called my mom to pick me up. One look at my hand and she knew we had to rush to a doctor because the weatherman was calling for another big snowstorm. We were not accustomed to going to the hospital, so we had no idea where to go once we got there. To make matters worse, the snowstorm had seemingly made everyone stay at home, so we were walking around this big, empty parking lot trying to figure out where we were supposed to go.

That is when we met him. He was an older portly man who had a head full of curly hair and an unkempt beard. He walked with a cane and was sporting a funny hat. We walked up to him and asked for directions. He was able to tell us exactly where to go. We made the short walk back to our vehicle and when we turned around to say good-bye, he was gone. We had been in the middle of a huge parking lot and the man disappeared! My mom and I looked at each other and knew we had just received directions from an angel.

There are certain times when we are in need of direction in our lives and yet there is no GPS that can help us. It is only when we turn to our Father in heaven for guidance that we are able to find our way. His directions might not always make sense but if we follow them as Joseph did, He will take care of us. Then one day we will hear those beautiful words: Arriving at destination!

Discussion Questions

1. Do you think to turn to God in times of great need?

2. Think about a time when you experienced something that could not be explained in the "natural" world.

3. Do you recognize God's intervention in a situation when it happens?
