HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW, AND I KNOW HE WATCHES ME

Key Verse

'Look at the birds in the air. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to Him than they are?' (Matthew 6:26, NLT)

Central Truth

Trust God to provide! He truly is watching out for you and your needs.

Reflections

I lived in an apartment where the oven vent was exposed on the balcony. One morning I heard endless chirping coming through the vent. Well, two birds decided to make a nest there and had little babies. I wasn't about to kick them out, so my roommate and I decided to name them: Bill and Brenda. We'd watch them fly around, gathering food for the babies. We'd watch the tiny heads pop up outside the vent as the parents would drop seeds for them. So cute!

Bill and Brenda had a home and never ran out of food. However, there was a time when I didn't know how I was going to get food on my plate or gas in my car. It was so easy to become discouraged, angry, and feel forgotten. Apparently those birds had provision but I had nothing, and I didn't understand why. One day, I began reading a book and the author mentioned a reference to 1 Peter 5:10 (NCV). Curious as to what it said, I looked it up. It was exactly what I needed to hear. It said, 'After you suffer for a short time, God who gives all grace will make everything right. He will make you strong and support you and keep you from falling. He called you to share in His glory in Christ, a glory that will continue forever.'

God was providing for me, even throughout my suffering. He was preparing me to share in His glory! Rather than focusing on what I didn't have, I remembered to be thankful for what I did.

God definitely has been taking care of me and is taking care of you too. It is up to us to continue to trust Him like little Bill and Brenda. He will provide for our needs even more than he provides for the birds. Trust God (pray expectantly) to provide for anything you need. It might seem like a long time before we see resolution, but He is watching out for us even in the midst of chaos.

Discussion Questions

1. In what situations have you found yourself where you feel hopeless or abandoned?

2. Name three things in the midst of it all where God has provided for you.

3. God has called you to share in His eternal glory. What glimpse of hope has He given you for that today?
