KNOCK, KNOCK

Key Verse

'Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You parents -- if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.' (Matthew 7:7-11 NLT)

Central Truth

God always answers when we knock at His door.

Reflections

Not long ago I had the opportunity to watch four kids, and it was truly an adventure! They were well behaved, but simply full of energy. Overall the evening went well: dinner, books, dirty diapers, a movie, and finally bedtime. Thirty minutes later all Rugrats were in bed. Next I strategically positioned myself at the bottom of the stairs, listening for any late night escapees. A whole hour had passed and all was peaceful so I grabbed my backpack and began some work. Fast-forward to 12:15 a.m., and a sound like a bullhorn rang out from the bedroom. I entered the room and I immediately saw her with open arms, and tear filled eyes. I quickly picked her up and the crying soon ceased.

'Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find.' As I rocked the little lady back to sleep I had a 'God' moment. First of all, God always hears and responds when we seek after Him. My simple human response was to immediately take heed to the cries and needs of the child, and how much more will our Father in heaven come to the aid of His children? God's love for us is deep and everlasting. It always leads Him to take care of His beloved.

'So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him?' Secondly, as I sat there rocking the little lady I was puzzled as to exactly what upset her. Unlike me, our Father in heaven does not question what we need. God knows our heart and how to supply not just what we want, but what we ultimately need in His supreme wisdom.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21, NIV)
