Central Truth
Our preparations are often inadequate for shortages, disasters, and the problems in life. Our preparations for the spiritual emergencies are even worse.
Reflections
I have noticed this new series of shows on TV about 'preppers.' Preppers are people who spend often hours each day preparing for end-of-the-world scenarios. They spend thousands of dollars on guns, food, emergency shelters, etc. It is quite amazing the lengths to which they are going. Some have even purchased rooms in missile silos in the mid-west that are sunk deep in the ground. Even our best preparations, however, will fall far short -- we just don't know the future and what exactly will happen.
In all the programs on preppers I have seen, never have I heard one speaking about spiritual preparation. It seems clear that no thought is given to the time when they will stand before God to give account of their lives.
Almost all the people in this Bible passage (Matt. 8) were not prepared for several days in the countryside listening to Jesus teach. They might have prepared for a day or two, but by the third day, little was left. At the end of their resources, they had no one to turn to. God's plans, however, are not limited by our lack; His purpose is not hindered by our ignorance; and His fellowship is not interrupted by any circumstance. God has a solution for them, and it was wonderful.
Yes, plan as best you can, as is appropriate. However, put your trust in God. He knows best, and he has prepared a place for you. He has a solution for you, regardless of your readiness and preparation.
Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:1-3, NKJV)
Discussion Questions
1. What preparations are you making for your final time before God?
2. You have probably planned for where you will sleep and what you will eat these next few days. What are your spiritual plans for rest and nourishment?
